Reflection Pool with Metal Sculpture

Reflection Pool with Metal Sculpture
The DNG was exposed at The Reflection Pool, Hilliers Arboretum, Hampshire, England on World Photography Day 2022. The Pool is intended to be a place for thought, contemplation, reflection.
Photography is possible because light is reflected from things. The light creates a latent image on which a photographer can work to make a picture. Here I have worked on the picture so as to set the bright light reflected from the hard metal frame alongside the delicate colours in the wings – reflecting the durability and hardness of nature but also its delicacy as perceived by humans.
Perhaps the picture also ‘reflects’ the development of photography from a pastime for a few scientifically minded, wealthy individuals to something that can be enjoyed by many people – I used a mass-produced ‘prosumer’ DSLR with the basic kit zoom lens.
DNG was processed using Affinity Photo software.

Beautiful place and very nicely thought out photograph. Yes, photography = 'light drawing'. If we forget the light we leave out a most important part of our experience.

I appreciate your words about connecting your photo to the specifics of our event day. Indeed I think your photo does 'reflect' what you've talked about.

I'm curious if you often think about these things.

Happy (belated) World Photography Day!

Hi Raingirl. Thank you for your encouraging comments. Do I think about these things often? Well, only to some extent and not in every picture. I tend to snap something in a way that appeals to me, judging 'by eye through the viewfinder', without analysing why it appeals until later and often not really knowing what type of a picture I will eventually try to produce. With the Reflection Pool picture however I actually had the Photography Day in my mind. I could have shot from the side of the sculpture showing the insect's legs, but that was not a peaceful or 'reflective' angle. I specifically wanted to work on the meanings of the word 'reflection'. [I once took a series of pictures linked to the D-Day battlefields in Normandy and in that case yes, I did think carefully (and respectfully) about what I would be saying in each of the finished pictures.]

I also usually take photos as I find them instead of pre-thinking about what I want. But I enjoy sometimes having a prompt like a few of the challenge groups we have (though I can't keep up with their weekly schedules!) and our once a year World Photography Day event. I think having a framework, or an intention, can help us create better art. For me, fine art isn't always the goal, I certainly take casual photos often enough, but I do mostly try to create fine art and it is a happy continual challenge.

Reflection certainly is a great meaning to think about when photographing. So many layers to that word!
