Chimneys, Fence & pip,
Vicar's Close in Wells, Somerset, is claimed to be the oldest purely residential street with original buildings surviving intact in Europe. These houses were built in the 14th and early 15th centuries and the close owes its origins to a grant of land and buildings by Walter de Hulle, a canon of Wells Cathedral, (Wikipedia)
Whilst taking these images I listened to beautiful music played on a violin emitting from an open window originating from what I assume was the adjacent music school,
As a point of interest, the houses " line each side of a quadrangle which appears longer than it is because of false perspective achieved by building the houses at the upper northern end nearest the chapel 9 feet (2.7 m) closer together than those at the lower southern end " (Wiki)
PiP shows chimney detail and some deterioration of the stone work.
Shot in 16.9 so a large view would be appreciated,
Link to the Wikipedia page, (Thank you Janet )

The house to the left is the only one that has been substantially enlarged. as you can see from Dad's photo there are further more modern chimney stacks to the rear.

I remember my father having to descend the narrow spiral stone staircase, in his vestments and carrying the sacred vessels, the chalice & patten. One had to go very cautiously.

Loved the inset too. Makes me wonder how it avoided getting blown up during the war? (Silly American, I don't know the history of bombings)

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Madeleine Defawes clubI love the contrasting light and dark sides of the close.........and the long shadows encroaching on the light side. The detail you've captured is fantastic and I like the young lad in the shot. I'd never heard of the "false perspective" trick before...........how clever of the architects and planners!
Definitely my fave Fence Friday shot of the week, if not the year! The only thing that irks me is that dormer in the roof on the right hand side - it really looks out of place. I wonder how they got permission for that?
HFF Roger.................have a super weekend.

Roger (Grisly) club has replied to Weard BültenaA very nice picture, which I really like
I have never been there, but you have now sold me the idea!!!
I am sure others have taken this picture, it is so tempting, but I doubt if any are as nice as this one. Great respect for not photoshopping that dormer window out of it though!
Best Wishes, HFF, and a nice weekend
