At the dollar store

At the dollar store
Snowmobile gloves at the dollar store. It's a Canadian dollar store so they probably cost more than a dollar. I get mine at Canadian Tire -- there's always a rack near the checkout. As I got older my hands suddenly started going numb much quicker in winter, so I switched to these..

This is a re-edit of an older post, but I think I only posted it on Flickr back when Flickr was tolerable.

Great colour contrast, John, and great use of repeating shapes. All the best, Joe

This is quite hypnotic. I had something to say about flickr and almost started hallucinating as I considered how best to express it. I'm looking at it again now and all thoughts of flickr are being pushed further and further back into the bit of my brain reserved for ... sorry, I've forgotten what point I was going to make.

The further you can push thoughts of Flickr out of your mind the better, TLC. I should have thought twice before mentioning the place.

I like the colours and textures.............but I thought they were lifejackets initially. Now you've told us they're gloves it's pretty obvious.

I've lost count of the number of gloves I've lost, taking them on and off to take photos :-)))

Get the fingerless type, like milkmen wore on cold mornings.

With me it's lens caps.

Tried them............but I find them very uncomfortable. Nowadays, if it's that cold I stay indoors :-))

Thanks for the advice though.........I might give them another go!

Funnily enough I've never lost a lens cap (although I've probably jinxed myself now). I did leave a monopod behind once and amazingly I went back the next day and found it exactly where I'd left it..!!

You can buy lens caps which have a bit of posh string attached. When removed from the lens they dangle and swing around and collide (sorry if this sounds a bit porno). Using them makes you look like a dweeb, and is a passport into Dweebdom for sure, but you won't ever lose a lens cap again, only your self-respect and social standing. There are other similar products but to record them here would make me no new friends and probably a few enemies. So I say, lose the lens caps, it shows how cool you are, fit a screw-in plain or UV filter instead if your bag management is scruffy (untidy bags are another indicator of coolness) and always supposing you don't want damaged lenses in the first place. I am a rather shallow photographer who imagines assignments with top models and assistants. As I can name my price I simply chuck my kit away after a gig and buy new.

For goodness' sake, who would nick a monopod? Even photographers don't want monopods.

I quite like my monopod thanks.............It's an old and trusted friend. I'm not sure it feels the same about me though, after I made it spend the night alone in the countryside :-))

You took that in good part so I ought in all truth reveal that for the past 12 years I have owned a Manfrotto 079 monopod and actually used it from time to time. I haven't abandoned it in distant parts, but I did lose a Giottos rocket blower somewhere in Avebury which was unfortunate.

Stephen Shore has an assistant who puts the plates in his view camera for him. Perhaps I could hire an assistant to manage my lens cap. And in winter another one to keep my spare batteries warm.

Thank you for your "confession". In return for your honesty, if I'm ever in Avebury, I'll keep an eye out for your rocket blower :-)
