Bathurst Street, Toronto

Bathurst Street, Toronto
Taken through the window of a bus with an advertising wrap at Bathurst station.

I think this was inspired by Lawren Harris's paintings of Toronto houses. No houses here, but it looks similar to them to me. I suspect it's the light. I put it in my Tributes album, anyway.

What a great idea...............I was convinced initially that this was some sort of metal fence!

It works very well as an abstract and I especially like the colour palette! Nice job John ;-)

Thanks, Keith. The view through the grid reminded me of paintings of Toronto streets by Lawren Harris, who went on to become one of the painters who created Canadian landscape style. The colours are more saturated than his, however.

It is good to see someone getting something creative out of an otherwise annoying practice. It's a bit like having train seats that don't align with the windows. I suppose as larger and larger proportions of people sit poking their phones, tablets or laptops, while travelling, less and less care about the view from the window, especially the geeks who design wraps and rolling stock - or is that too unkind?

No, it's not unkind. The people who run public transport are mercenary Philistines. In England the services are so awful that we restrain our complaints to overcrowding and lateness. But by no means are they the only deficiencies.

I don't think it's unkind, Phil. I get very annoyed when we are expected to serve technology rather than have technology serving us. I hadn't thought about bus-wrapping as an example, but it certainly is, especially on intercity buses. So thanks for the insight. Perhaps I'm getting too used to being onconvenienced.

The people who run everything in Toronto are Philistines, TLC. They are creating a city of near-identical glass towers (highly inappropriate for the climate, too). O f course, maybe they're showing us some mercy by making it difficult for us to see the bland, homogenized cityscape they're creating while we're riding through it on the bus.

Phil is certainly not being unkind about this annoying practice. I recently read that a sightseeing bus company somewhere was using this material on the lower deck windows of its sightseeing buses!!

Only just noticed it recently in Madrid. I often take a bus from my place in the city centre to my sister's home about 25 miles away. There are some terrific views of the Guadarrrama Mountains on the way. Or there were ...

In this part of the world junior hockey teams and university sports teams travel by bus with a wrap glamorizing the team or the university. They're also used in regular service, though. They would not be ideal for the scenic run from Toronto to Niagara Falls.

You wonder about the advisability of that with an intercity bus. You'd think it would obscure the name of the bus line.
