Ipswich Buses 221 (G221 VDX) in Mildenhall - 18 Oct 1992 (182-32A)

Sunday 18 October 1992 (1150) - Ipswich Buses 221 (G221 VDX), an Optare MetroRider new in November 1989, was seen at King Street, Mildenhall when working the 1000 Ipswich to Ely service 156, one of the ‘Suffolk Sundaybus’ services sponsored for a number of years Suffolk County Council. The services criss-crossed the county and connected with each other serving main towns and tourist attractions/stately homes etc. Service 156 was operated by Ipswich Buses and Neals Travel then of Chippenham later Isleham.

The people in the photograph were not to be bus passengers but were spectators awaiting the passing of runners taking part in an athletic road race. The athletes route was from Recreation Way (right) then down St. Andrew’s Street (left). The latter was the way the bus would normally travel but was closed to traffic. The bus driver had to obtain details from the police officers regarding the route he could now take.
