Walfords Gibbet

Walfords Gibbet
Captured at Walfords Gibbet, on the Quantock Hills, Somerset

The place name comes from the story of a young man, a charcoal burner named John Walford who was very popular and became engaged to be married to a lady named Ann Rice. A local girl named Jane Shorney however set her sights on John and became pregnant by him. He was arrested and told he must marry Jane or pay for the upkeep of his child. His engagement to Ann was ended and he married Jane. The marriage was soon in trouble and three weeks after the marriage with Jane already pregnant for a second time the couple went to Castle comfort in Donnington with John arriving back home in the early hours on his own.

The next day some children spotted some blood coming from below a gate and the body of Jane Walford was found beaten and knifed in what became known as Dead Woman's Ditch. A search of their cottage revealed a bloody knife and John was arrested and sentenced to death. His former fiance came to see him before he was hanged and gave him her forgiveness. John's body was left to hang for 100 days for all to see.

I have added a song called 'The Hanging Tree' sung here by Rachel Zegler.

Thank you very much Vero. It is a lovely area, especially when the leaves turn colour and is not far from where we live. There are good views from the gate when it is not too muddy, although partially ruined now by the huge new power station being built and visible in the distance.

Have a lovely peaceful weekend. Kisses

Thank you very much Joe. When it is dry we often stop to admire the view from the gate. You can see for miles but sadly in one direction the view of Hinkley Point power station is a bit of blot on the landscape.

A beautiful place with a gorry name Carol :-) Thanks for telling us the story. Punishment was swift and nasty in those days! I love your framing, with the curve in the path leading to the gate.

HFF Carol and a good and hopefully dry, weekend.
Ecobird club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne
Thank you Rosa. It is lovely up there and whilst the names remain I doubt that most people even wonder at their origins these days. According to the stories they were married only three weeks when he murdered his wife and yet she was already pregnant with their second child. That is a real love/hate relationship!! Sadly they both paid the price in the end.

Ecobird club has replied to tiabunna club
Thank you very much George. I know what you mean but thought the old place names stick I doubt that many give the history a thought. A strange story really. It seems he was well know and liked as a very amiable man and yet he flipped and killed his wife after just three weeks of marriage, though she was by then already pregnant with her second child. Sadly you are right in that domestic violence is not new but we are more open about it I think nowadays. Victims often feel to blame in some way and ashamed so it has been something of a hidden crime. I sincerely hope that the situation is changing for the better. It shocks me that people are capable of such violence and hatred.

10 months ago. Edited 10 months ago.
Edna Edenkoben club has replied to Ecobird club
It would have been. But was it possible or even acceptable back then? Perhaps murder was more acceptable and easier than a divorce??! ;-))) He should have stayed with Ann in the first place and he could have saved himself a lot of trouble!! Oh, the song is cool...once I got used to the story underneath the photo ;-)

Ahhhh...I see what you mean. Well, it's supposed to be dry here...as far as rain goes ;-)
Ecobird club has replied to Edna Edenkoben club
I really don't know Edna. It seems strange that murder might be more acceptable than divorce - but it was quicker and he seemed to be a man in a bit of a hurry. Anne was also pregnant by him by this time!!! It seems he was well liked as when the gallows were not ready they took him to the pub and bought him a drink and he even shook hands with a man who gave evidence against him. Once the cage in which he was left to hang finally disintegrated sympathetic neighbours even buried the body. I would doubt the murder was premeditated as it sounded more like an alcohol fuelled argument which went wrong when she taunted him and he lashed out. He must not have planned it as he could not lift his dead wife's body so rolled her into the ditch as he had no means of moving her and though he hid the knife he did not get rid of his bloody clothes. Who can tell? If as they say he was a pleasant man maybe he had a guilty conscience and that may had added to the situation or he may just have been trying to find the easiest way out of a difficult situation.

No rain here this weekend -Yes!!!! We even have a little sunshine. Hope your weekend is lovely too and I have not depressed you with horrible tales!!

Thank you very much Jocelyne. There are lovely long views from the gateway you can see in th picture, but I just love the shapes and colours in the trees. There is almost always something to catch your eye. I played a frustrating gmae with a cheeky little squirrel who would run around the branches when my view was obsured by other trees and then when I got closer he would stay stock still behing the tree trunks until I moved. I gave up int he end. Maybe I will manage to get a photo next time!!!

Beyond the bend in the road
by Fernando Pêssoa

Beyond the bend in the road
there may be a well, a castle.
There may be simply more road.
I neither know nor ask.
As long as I’m on the road before the bend
I simply look at the road before the bend,
since I can see only the road before the bend.
It would do no good to look elsewhere
or at what I can’t see.

Thank you very much Diana. I am sure you are right. Time passes and the past is forgotten but the places keep their names. This was a long time ago - 1789 and I am sure it is popular for how pretty it is and not for the gruesome past!!

Although some parts of Somerset have suffered from flooding we have been fine here fortunately and even have some sunshine today. I feel sorry for those whose homes and businesses have been flooded though, both here and in other countries. It must be heartbreaking.
