Isodontia mexicana - Extreme Wespentaille - Extreme wasp waist - PiP

Der Stahlblaue Grillenjäger (Isodontia mexicana) ist eine Grabwespe, die eigentlich in Mittel- und Nordamerika heimisch ist. Die Art wurde aber in den 1960er Jahren nach Südfrankreich eingeschleppt. Sie hat sich von hier aus über große Teile Südeuropas ausgebreitet und anschließend über Mitteleuropa, einschließlich England. 1998 wurde der Stahlblaue Grillenjäger erstmals auch in Deutschland nachgewiesen. 2017 wurde die Art erstmals in Berlin gesichtet. Mittlerweile hat I. mexicana ganz Deutschland zumindest lückig besiedelt.

Ein Kennzeichen der Art ist u.a. die extreme, gebogene Wespentaille (siehe auch das PiP).
In die Brutnester werden als Futter für die Larven gerne erjagte Grillen (Name!) und Heuschrecken eingelagert. Die Imagines der Art sind harmlose Blütenbesucher und saugen gerne Nektar am Mannstreu (Eryngium campestre z.B.). Auch das von mir gefundene Exemplar wurde von mir an einer Blüte vom Mannstreu gefunden.

The Mexican grass-carrying wasp (Isodontia mexicana) is a Sphecidae wasp that is actually native to Central and North America. However, the species was introduced to southern France in the 1960s. From here it spread across much of southern Europe and then to central Europe, including England. In 1998 the Mexican grass-carrying wasp was also recorded in Germany for the first time. The species was first seen in Berlin in 2017. In the meantime, I. mexicana has colonised the whole of Germany, at least sporadically.

Crickets (name!) and grasshoppers, which are often hunted, are stored in the brood nests as food for the larvae. The imagines of the species are harmless flower visitors and like to suck nectar from the field eryngo (Eryngium campestre e.g.). The specimen I found was also found by me on a flower of field eryngo
