Eine arge Kratzbürste ... A real scratching brush - mit PiPs

Die Mariendistel (Silybum marianum) ist eine relativ seltene ziemlich große Distelart (bis 1,5 m), die aus dem Mittelmeerraum stammt und bei uns gelegentlich auf Ruderalplätzen gefunden wird. Am Beginn ihrer Entwicklung im Frühjahr fallen ihre schönen Blattrosetten auf (siehe PiP 1). Die Blätter besitzen eigenartige weiße Streifen (siehe PiP1). Der Legende nach sollen diese weißen Streifen von der Milch der Jungfrau Maria stammen - daher der Name der Pflanze.
Die Blütenknospe ist ganz auffällig stark bedornt (siehe Hauptbild und PiP2), aus ihr entwickelt sich eine schön gefärbte, ästhetische Blüte. Die starke Bedornung stellt natürlich einen Fraßschutz dar.
Seit der Antike wird die Mariendistel als Heilmittel eingesetzt. In Österreich wurde sie 2021 zur Arzneipflanze 2021 ausgewählt.

The milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is a relatively rare, rather large thistle species (up to 1,5 m) that originates from the Mediterranean region and is occasionally found in ruderal areas in our country. At the beginning of its development in spring, its beautiful leaf rosettes are striking (see PiP 1). The leaves have peculiar white stripes (see PiP1). According to legend, these white stripes come from the milk of the Virgin Mary - hence the plant's name.
The flower bud is conspicuously spiny (see main picture and PiP2), from which a beautifully coloured, aesthetic flower develops. The strong spination naturally protects the plant from being eaten.
Milk thistle has been used as a remedy since ancient times. In Austria, it was selected as medicinal plant of 2021.
