Lieutenant-Colonel John By (geboren am 7. August 1779 in London/England, gestorben am 1. Februar 1836 in Frant - East Sussex/England) war ein englischer Militäringenieur.
Er gilt als Erbauer des Rideau-Kanals (einer (militärisch) sicheren Route zwischen Montreal und Kingston am Ontariosee) und gründete die Stadt Bytown.
Bytown wurde 1855 in 'Ottawa' unbenannt und ist heute die kanadische Hauptstadt.
