Gerald The Dinosaur ...

Gerald The Dinosaur ...
For the current Sunday Challenge, which had the theme of high key ... meet Gerald The Dinosaur, not so much T-Rex as Teeny-Rex.

I only intended to use him for a bit of fun after the end of the main shoot, but in the end I wasn't really happy with any of the shots I'd taken of my intended subject. So I'm posting this one of Gerald, albeit somewhat later than intended, rather than miss the challenge altogether.

I'd read that it was difficult to do high key shots inside, but as the weather has been pretty miserable on and off, I elected not to shoot outdoors. I thought that by using a white card background and some daylight lamps I'd be able to pull the effect off ... how wrong I was.

No matter what I did the creamy white object I was trying to shoot was either over exposed and blown around its edges or, if I got it captured cleanly, then the background was off-white going on for grey. I'm guessing then that you either need some studio lights, even rather basic ones, or this technique is best tackled outside in bright sunshine.

Sorry if I sound negative folks, but I've not enjoyed this challenge one little bit and unless I can get some decent lights I don't think I'll be trying it again in a hurry.

In the end this was the best I could get and even then I had to do some processing to get the pure white background.

Bravo Paul, you succeeded in accomplishing this challenge! I was equally frustrated with it all, and in the 11th hour, had hubby assist in lighting control as I photographed one of my dolls (I submitted it as a NTSC image). It wasn't until I checked my memory card that I discovered a photo I took of my maple tree along with other poor attempts earlier that morning. It turned out to be the one I used as my TSC submission; go figure! ;-D

Glad I'm not the only one that found it difficult and I really appreciate your kind comments as well as the fave. Need to go check out your doll now! ;)

I had the same problems with my shot. It really was a challenge this week. I think that your shot came out very well.

Many thanks for that Esther ... let's hope we both feel happier doing low key! :)

Gerald to the rescue ... getting the white to be crisp and clear is darn tricky but you have it here. To me a little processing is better than driving oneself mad!! I like this Paul! :)

I think I'd made it more difficult Chris by initially choosing a white object to shoot and trying to do it indoors too without any 'proper' lights.

Anyway, glad you like it and thanks for not giving me a hard time for giving it a little tweak ... thanks too for the fave! :)

:) Paul since I usually end up having to give an image a little tweak I wouldn't think of giving anyone a hard time when they also tweak a bit. Besides we are here to challenge ourselves but not to the point of frustration. Enjoy the rest of the week.

I think it turned out pretty nice Paul and good for you for not giving up. He's adorable and is bathed in bright light.

I used photo lamps with "Daylight" fluorescent pigtail bulbs in them since I didn't like the light the photo bulbs was creating. I also used the "frost" effect in PicMonkey and that really brightened mine up. It does take some playing around with and I also had a lot of shots that tended to be more gray than white.

(Now I hope this doesn't disappear as IP is having some very weird issues lately.)

I had the same problems with the lighting - but if you see a professional light setup... I think that's nothing what we can do in our "kitchen studios"! ;-DD So I was also satisfied with an off-white background and Gerald is also well done and a cute motif!

Much appreciated Dida and you're absolutely right about the equipment.

I guess sometimes we, or at least I, expect too much and forget that we're all at different levels and that applies to equipment as well as technique! :)
