Hnausapollur Panorama
Hnausapollur (also called Bláhylur) is an explosion crater/maar at the southern end of the Bárðarbunga fissure swarm near Landmannalaugar. The cones and craters in that area were formed by explosive fissure eruptions In 870 (Vatnaöldur) and 1480 (Veiðivötn). With 3,3 respectively 6,7 km³ basaltic tephra these were the largest hydromagmatic fissure eruptions in historic times.
The major worry during the 2014/15 Holuhraun eruption was that a dyke would turn southwest from Bárðarbunga and trigger an eruption which would have endangered the hydroelectric power plants in the area (contingency plans including the blowing-up of dams were made).
