Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong
Punakha Dzong, situated at the confluence of Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers was founded in 1637/ 38 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Until 1955 it was the seat of the Bhutanese government.
A few days after this photo was taken, the royal wedding took place in the Dzong.

From the far north to the far east! And always in very special destinations... I like the sight of this colourful pagoda set in a lovely natural scenery.

Thanks, Graham! The Dzong is in a beautiful but dangerous setting, when glacier lakes burst the rivers are prone to flash floods.

Thanks, Jaap! It's hard to believe that all this has been built without plans- just by following old traditions.

Forest covering the hills looks pretty "New Zealandish"! ;-)

From a distance it does indeed! The forest cover is rather intact in Bhutan, the tree species are a bit different to NZ, though.
