Pont de l'Abîme

Pont de l'Abîme
The "Pont de l'Abîme" ("Bridge of the Abyss") is hanging breathtaking 96 metres over the "Gorges du Chéran". It was built in 1887 (the year Eiffel startet "his tower" in Paris) by engineer Ferdinand Arnodin, who had revolutionesed the techniques of suspension bridges.

After only one year of construction, the bridge was inaugurated in January 1888. First four horses pulled a 7000 kg cart across the bridge. After that the bridge got populated by the applauding crowd, shaking hands over the chasm.
