Villers-Saint-Paul - Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul

Villers-Saint-Paul - Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul
"Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul" is not mentioned in any written document before the 13th century. Most historians agree, that the church was built not earlier than in the first half of the 12th century. About a century later, the Romanesque transept and choir got demolished - and replaced by the large Gothic structure, seen here. The tower was erected within the 13th century.

The church was added to the list of "monuments historique" already in 1862, but the restoration process started end of the 19th century.

The walls of the nave are well conserved. They are decorated between the corbels with very unusual reliefs. These carvings were well protected under the roof and are not weathered. Some of them are fantastic and very mysterious.

Are there three heads? I am absolutely unsure, what can be seen here. It reminds me on Davy Jones, a character from "Pirates of the Caribbean". But between this carving and the film are about 800 years.

Sonja!
I had a very long skype-talk to a friend, who is very well read in American Fantastic- and Horror literature. As he lives near Baltimore this all starts with E.A.Poe - and using some stepping stones - we talked about Lovecraft´s "Necronomicon". He agreed with your idea. In case these carvings were created within the 12th century, they are very early, as the translation into Latin by Olaus Wormius is dated 1228... But he remarked, that more (if not all) carvings have to fit into that.

Now somebody should contact Spielberg and Lucas, as my friend is sure, that a scenario (à la "Indiana-Jones") could use these carvings.

Just to let you know...Before I saw the saltwater-head - - I saw a spaghetti monster..;-))
