mural daoist DSC 2366

These are details from a pair of murals now in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, but originally from a monastery, China. They were painted in ink on clay sometime around 1300 C.E (Yuan Dynasty). They represent a procession of Daoist (Taoist) deities offering tribute to Yuanshi Tianjun (the Primordial Celestial Excellency) who “resides in the Heaven of Jade Purity…. and …came into being at the beginning of the universe as a result of the merging of pure breaths. He then created Heaven and Earth”. (From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuanshi_Tianzun ).
I think this is a masterpiece. Each character is unique and drawn with intense character and style.
