stm - cycling lion
The logo for British Railways between 1948 and 1956. This example is on the tender of 6000 at STEAM. (The GWR loco "King George V").
Nicknamed the "Cyling Lion" I prefer this to all the later logos, although the simple version of the "hadaway comeback" arrows used from 1965 are simple, clear and symbolic.

A difficult choice as I also like the BR "Arrows" - often referred to as the "Hadaway come back" - and the GWR "Button". The Tyneside Metro "M" and the London Underground "roundel" are also good examples.
PS, I used an old image as I'm currently suffering from a bad back ...
