Inscribed on the clay tablet, the map has enabled archaeologists to locate ruined buildings: (A) the ziggurat, (B) canal, (C) enclosure and gardens, (D) city gate, and (E) the Uuphrates River (From the photographic collections of the University Museum, The University of Pennsylvania)

This forbidding area became the home of many folk and the land of the first cities. The region around Akkad (or Agade, now modern Baghdad) was occupied by bands of Semitic nomads, people related to one another by their language, Semite, a family of languages that includes Hebrew and Arabic. Into the south came the Sumerians, a people of farmers and city builders who probably migrated from the east. By 3000 BC they had established a number of cities in the southernmost part of Mesopotamia, which became known as Sumer. As the Sumerians pushed north, they came into contact with Semites, who readily adopted Sumerian culture, and turned to urban life. The Sumerians soon changed the face of the land made Mesopotamia the ‘Cradle of civilization” ~ Page 10
