HFF York Yorkshire 12th March 2024

HFF York Yorkshire 12th March 2024
The National Railway Museum in York was relatively quiet so I could get a clear shot of world speed record holder LNER A4 4-6-2 4468 Mallard in the main hall of the museum. One of the diesels that replaced the A4s on the ECML, Deltic 55002 KOYLI is on the turntable behind.

HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend.

Always good to see the Mallard Pete. This reminds me that it is about time that I revisited this museum too. Well done.

My mum tells me that the Mallard made me cry when the driver blew the whistle in York Station whilst we stood nearby. I would have been two or three years old. Maybe 1953 or 1954. I don’t remember that experience, but I do remember seeing the train there.

This is a super shot, Pete, which brings back long-distant memories. (Can you still climb on the engines in the railway museum? I remember doing so back in the day when I was still in short pants, standing in the cab and climbing on the coal tender, but I think that was in the original museum, not this modern one. Or does my memory play me false?)

Thanks John. I think you may well be thinking of the old museum at Clapham because it only came to York in 1975 by which time I suspect you probably would have been in long trousers at age 24... :-))

No, Pete. There was an LNER museum in York which predated the NRM. I think it was old railway sheds and was opened in the 1920s or 30s. There were steps next to each loco and you could climb up and go in the cabs. I remember the NRM being opened ins the 1970s and also that many people in York were annoyed that London was taking over Yorkshire's stuff again! (Much the same as with the Museum of Photography in Bradford.)

Ah, I thought you meant that you remembered climbing on Mallard at York. It was at Clapham until 1975 when it moved north so wouldn't have been in the LNER museum which I also visited. In answer to your original question then, yes you can still climb up to some of the locos in the new museum. This is Duchess of Hamilton:

HFF Pete. I'm glad I don't have to service this... The bridge over the loco reminds me of the foot bridges between platforms at stations here in Qld.
