The National Railway Museum in York was relatively quiet so I could get a clear shot of world speed record holder LNER A4 4-6-2 4468 Mallard in the main hall of the museum. One of the diesels that replaced the A4s on the ECML, Deltic 55002 KOYLI is on the turntable behind.
HFF to everyone. Have a great weekend.

On the West Highland line & the 10.15 Jacobite crosses the River Lochy as it departs Fort William for Mallaig, headed by LNER/NELPG locomotive K1 2-6-0 62005, the foothills of Ben Nevis in the background.
I arrived early at the location in full sunlight but of course that didn't last long and I stood for 20 minutes in the driving rain. Fortunately it relented shortly before the train turned up, result happiness.

With 12 coaches on, LNER Gresley A3 4-6-2 60103 Flying Scotsman accelerates away from Syston North Junction, beyond the bridge in the right distance, with the RTC Yorkshireman from London King's Cross to York. Not exactly the conventional route but with 4 tracks and no wires the MML does a passable impression of the ECML in the 1960s.

LNER A3 4472 (60103) runs eastwards through Sheffield Victoria station light engine to wait for the stock of its special train to arrive. It's running with one tender so the engine number is nowhere to be seen, just a LNER crest on the cab-side and the letters LNER on the tender-side.
The 1500v DC overhead wires are evidence that the Woodhead route is still open & this ex-Great Central Railway main line is still in business. The station and its passenger services only lasted until January 1970 however.

In honour of Flying Scotsman's rebirth (after a ridiculous £4.2 million rebuild & 10 years of waiting) this is one I took earlier.
This was one of the early Open Days - the second one in fact, the first was in October 1968 - at the Great Western Railway shed at Tyseley. Flying Scotsman arrives from the main line with a special train.

At first glance it looks like A1 Pacific 60163 Tornado is heading off to Leicester but the second arm down on the totem pole reveals that it is actually backing down into Platform 2 at Loughborough station.
This brand new built locomotive was still running-in and carried a grey undercoat livery.

A scene which covers over a hundred years of Pennine railway construction history from the opening of the first 3-mile long Woodhead tunnel (right) in 1845 by the MS&LR (later Great Central) to the opening of the new double bore tunnel in 1954 by British Railways (left). Sadly all of it is proper history now since this former important main line closed in 1981.

After running from Loughborough to Swithland Up Loop double headed; Peckett 'Yorktown' class 0-4-0ST "Teddy" and NER Y7 0-4-0T 1310 with two coaches we came off to let 1310 run round. Another shot taken from the headshunt as we prepared to operate passenger trains on the new Mountsorrel Branch.
