Tellwright & Watkin
A recent outing with Capitol 203 yielded some interesting bricks from our perusal of a number of sites across the Potteries. This particular example was found in Cobridge which is no surprise as this area is also the location of the brickworks from which it came.
The 1879 trade directory shows Telwright (sic) & Watkin as brickmakers in Cobridge. In April of 1879 the partnership between Samuel Tellwright and Joseph Meir Watkin was dissolved, with Watkin continuing the business alone. Thanks to Capitol 203 for the information that Tellwright and Watkin were operating Cobridge Colliery in c1880 and Sandbach Colliery in 1882. In 1877 there was a brickworks adjacent to the colliery with three round kilns. By 1900 all had been cleared away.
We also found a couple of bricks by Tellwright & Watkin lettered with a sans-serif font.
