Truckee River

Truckee River
Looking upstream from off the Truckee River Trail in the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, Nevada. Here the trail follows an old railroad grade that highlights the bench on the right. The Truckee has incised a channel in Pleistocene Lake Lahontan sediments in this area. Lake Lahontan was the ice-age lake that filled many of the basins in western Nevada, up to about 12K years ago.
The Truckee rises from the overflow from Lake Tahoe, in the Sierra Nevada, and ends at landlocked Pyramid Lake, flowing thru Reno, NV along the way. The Truckee River Trail is intended eventually to follow the river along its entire length, but there are still gaps at present due to landowner issues. You can buy an online parking permit from the tribe to hike or bike on the parts of the trail that are on the Rez. Just leave the permit on your dashboard.

Having spent all of my life on coasts, I have trouble comprehending 'closed' river systems like this or the Walker or Owens that don't eventually find their way to an ocean.

It apparently was quite a revelation when John C. Fremont realized the whole Great Basin (his name, in fact) is a region of interior drainage. There'd been all sorts of tales about rivers thru the area that reached the sea, and therefore would have been valuable for trade routes. The Buenaventura is a name that floats up-- Too bad they didn't exist! ;)

There's even a Wikipedia writeup on the Buenaventura!

Interesting, and makes sense as to how people thought at the time. Or, another conclusion could be that the geography of Utah makes for crazy people :)
