Horny toad

Horny toad
What we always called these lizards as kids. More formally, it's a "horned lizard." Phrynosoma spp., probably P. hernandesi. Off the Virgin River Rim trail in southern Utah. This lizard has a red tinge to its body, which better blends in with the local soil. The ones in my area (western Nevada) tend to be more gray.

As they say in the army "movement betrays presence".

Works for wildlife, too! The human eye's sensitivity to motion is also exploited in a standard piece of astronomical equipment, a "blink microscope." It's used for comparing photographs of the same area of sky at different times to find something (e.g., an asteroid) that's moved. Obviously comparing all the little dots one-by-one would be incredibly tedious and error-prone! The optics in the blink comparator (another name) show you first one photo and then the other, all aligned; then anything that's moved shows up as a point jumping back and forth between the views. I always thought it was an elegant solution--
