Slide Mountain
Carson Range, Nevada, USA. From Washoe Valley, looking slightly north of west. The "slide" part of the name was not pulled out of a hat; the steep, bare slopes on the south side (the left) are the source of enormous landslide and debris flows. The most recent large flow was in 1983, an El Niño year. It destroyed several houses, blocked US 395, and killed a person sleeping in one of the houses. The slope is prone to sliding because joints (cracks) in the granite making up the mountain are tilted toward the valley, and so furnish ready-made failure planes.
The Mt. Rose ski area is on the north side of Slide Mountain; you can just barely see the edges of some of the runs.
