Yad Vashem - a place and a name

Yad Vashem is Israel's official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and is located in Jerusalem. Each of my images is produced in colour and black and white. You can decide which better conveys the message of this important place.

This section of the museum records the 'death marches' instigated by the desperate Germans as the end of the war approached. Not wanting prisoners to be found alive in the camps, they evacuated them in appalling winter conditions with minimal food and clothing. Those who were unable to keep up were shot. The picture in this photograph is the dramatic and moving 'The Death March' by Israel Alfred Glück. Glück was an Auschwitz survivor who was sent on a death march to, ultimately, Buchenwald. He survived to reach Bergen-Belsen, then a Displaced Persons (DP) camp, and, later, emigrate to Israel where he died in 2007.
