Born Free UPDATE
UPDATE Matt Monro (Terence Parsons) recorded "Born Free" (John Barry - Don Black) for the film soundtrack where it appeared over the closing credits. Co-composer Don Black was Matt Moro's manager and the song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1966. Pianist Winifred Atwell was Matt's mentor and gave him his stage name.
The Roger Williams' (Louis Weertz) cover was his last hit and peaked at number seven on Billboard's top one hundred, number one on the adult contemporary chart in 1966. Roger's name change to the founder of Rhode Island came from David Kapp of Kapp Records.
Fellow Kapp Records artists The Hesitations (lead singer George Scott, Gary Harbour, Ric Kerr, Roger Maple, Clarence Smith and Ronnie Wilson Jr.) issued this version of "Born Free" in 1968 and hit number thirty-eight on the Top One Hundred. The lead singer was shot and killed shortly after the band achieved success. Group information may not be accurate as the facts changed from several reliable sources.
