Tulips And Heather
Based on the traditional Mexican song "Carmen, Carmela", Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians first recorded "Tulips And Heather" (Milton Carson) in February of 1951. When Fred was eighty-three, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. For an American civilian this was the highest honour for which one could hope.
The next year Perry (Pierino) Como issued the hit for "Tulips And Heather" when the song peaked at number sixteen on Billboard. Backing was provided by Mitchell Ayers and his Orchestra and the chorus under the direction of Ray Charles.
