Wheal Pink / Pink Moors

Wheal Pink / Pink Moors
The former Wheal Pink copper mine was located exactly here. No one would believe it today unless they knew!
St Day, Cornwall.
Marginally better on large.

IT LOOKS AS IF ONE HORSE HAS BEEN SENT TO COVENTRY. I HOPE THAT'S NOT THE CASE!

Even without any help it's amazing how nature reclaims old quarry and mine sites

Probablemente la naturaleza ahora tiene mejor aspecto. Las minas que se abandonan dejan cicatrices. En las de hierro de Bizkaia, con profundos agujeros se formaron lagunas.

Thank you, Jose Manuel. Near where I used to live, near London, there were extensive gravel pits where gravel for building had been extracted. Now they have been flooded and provide wonderful leisure facilities for walking, fishing, water sports and bird watching.

You're quite right, no-one would know that there is a mine just underneath this beautiful pastoral scene.

There would have been masive edifices, chimneys, pumping engine houses, metal processng plants above ground, Jenny. It's that stark contrast that is amazing!

Thank you everybody. Glad you like this tranquil scene. Not spectacular countryside but pleasant enough, especially given what it must have been like in the first half of the 19th century!

Shows that mine sites _can_ be reclaimed!
Must still be cold if the horses are wearing blankets!

It has been colder than the average early spring, Steve and even today, my upload shows a horse coat still being worn.
Mine shafts were conscientiously capped when spent or no longer economic. This since about 1760 - ish. Before that there was much activity and not much of that was well-documented. Only last week another back garden disappeared when an uncharted shaft opened up during torrential rains. I forget where it was but it wasn't far from St Day and even in the next street to my parents a new hole opened up in their garden a few years ago. Fortunately the house was OK. St Day is known locally as 'Sink City'!
Many thanks for your interest and visit, Steve! I know Pam J would want me to send you her best wishes and so I do willingly but think that's already been done in recent messaging on ipermail!
