View from the dining room window.

View from the dining room window.
Today was a relief in that the recent calima (Saharan dust cloud), and the smoke from the wild-fires in Portugal and Western Spain finally cleared, leaving a lovely view for the first time in about a week!
Perhaps better on full screen.
Added extra little titbit (I'm not American so it's titbit OK?); bottom left hand corner of the shot is the top of a pot of basil. Usually they last 1 to 2 weeks and then they expire and you buy another on your next shop (very cheap). But this hardy little bugger has been happily thriving for a couple of months now - almost to the point when I'll have to think up a name for it as it has almost become part of the family! Any suggestions for a name? Please let me know!!

More luck than judgement, Reinhold! Until November 2020 I had been living in a nice flat in the centre of Madrid but covid removed all my English classes as you can imagine and there weren't enough companies with sufficient funds to continue classes even on-line. Then I got Covid badly and I couldn't afford to stay in my flat any more. My girlfriend had a flat full of (girl) lodgers and I couldn't stay there, but fortunately my sister has this large house with a spare bedroom and so I have been gratefully ensconced here ever since. Lucky me!

Indeed I do, Gilbert and the view of the distant Sierra de Guadarrama is one spur for me to keep going with my self-physiotherapy. I want to return to walking there sooner rather than later!
Many thanks!

What a simply stunning view, Andy. I'd sit out there all day and just watch the landscape, sometimes changing, certainly with the weather. I'm so pleased you had somewhere beautiful like this to recuperate in, and I can fully understand how this encourages you to go climbing there again.

Pleased your youngest son has got over it now; what a relief that must have been!
'Happy' is a good choice, but I'm still undecided. As I say, I'll wait a day or two and put a range of options to it and ask which one it prefers!

I'm tending to think that way; keeping it simple.
I might even shorten it to 'Bas' as it seems to be part of the family now and it might appreciate the familiarity!

Bas contributed willingly to a very nice tomato and mozarella salad this evening, but he is happy (well, what is left of him!) as he is fully aware of his noble function in life!!!

Hopefully, Andy doesn't pluck the leaves, but always cuts off the stems as well, so that Bas lives long and can always form new shoots. ;)
Andy Rodker club has replied to * ઇઉ * club
Thank you, * ઇઉ *!
It has always been problematic. Apparently it's a corrollery of its popularity. I`m a dab hand with kitchen herbs and spices but not normally with basil. Nurseries that grow it have effectively altered its genetic equilibrium so that long - lived varieties have been bred out of existence.
No profit in sustainable basil of course!

* ઇઉ * club has replied to Andy Rodker club
Sad but true, Andy.

There are still some annual or biennial basil species, but even these will probably have to give way to profiteering at some point. :((

I have many good recipes for basil, often the best are the simplest such as yours. My favourite is a very popular one and is Italian; mozzarella cheese, very good ripe tomato, basil and. Modena balsamic vinegar.

I thought about that first of all but decided, rightly I think, that there is probably a majority of members who would need an explanation for it not to be worthwhile!
Better than Manuel though, even if it's a faint pissibolity that 'Bas' came from Barcelona!

Beautiful image Andy. Sorry to hear about the fires. Our state of California has been devastated by years of drought and wildfires.
Andy Rodker club has replied to Gary Benson (grbenso…
Indeed! We all know about the terrible fires in California, Australia and Spain / Portugal. Every year there are tragedies, some years worse than others.
As a side issue, I have an interest in wine and it saddens me how many famous vineyards in the Western USA and Australia have to write off grape harvests due to fire or smoke taint.

Wow that view is gorgeous Andy. Hard to get any work done I imagine as you would have to keep stopping to take it all in.

My pots of basil from the supermarket never last that long but then I am pretty adept at even killing a cactus! Bas sounds as good as it gets, but my first thought was Sybil, - she could probably also kill the same cactus with just a glance!! Hope Bas lasts a good while, especially now it has a name!!
Andy Rodker club has replied to Ecobird club
People are suggesting that Bas likes the view too much to think about expiring just yet!
Others thought of Sybill and of course that was my first choice but I didn't give it as a possibility because of the explanations required for our non Anglo members!
Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately - I'm not lazy but I appreciate the time for physical recovery) I'm not working at the moment but I do a lot of cooking and the stove, etc. face the other way, otherwise the distractions from this view would lead to burning things I'm sure!
Thank you, Carol - Yes it is one heck of a view, especially so close to a major city (we're only about 15 miles from Madrid city centre, which, as you can probably guess, is in the other direction!)

But I see the distant mountains and I know that is where I need to return to sooner rather than later, so I persevere.
