Thank you, Anton and thanks too for the info. As one who accidentally brushed past a nest of processionary pine moth caterpillars on a walk in the Sierra de Guadarrama (I had to cut the walk short and go back to town to find a farmacia!), I'm even more pleased that these birds exist!

An attractive and distinctive looking bird Andy, - even I recognised it and I am not very good at recognising birds. Like you I have never seen one in the flesh though, and as they don't really breed over here I would count myself lucky to ever see one.

A lovely shot, and at least your sister captured it for you to enjoy when you got back. Maybe it will be back again. I imagine you spend more time looking out of the window ever since you found out it had visited!!!

Yes, Carol! I've been on the lookout for a hoopoe outside this window ever since I moved here to my sister's home 18 months ago and she told me it was a regular visitor. I still hold out hiugh hopes of seeing one as they are a most fascinating bird and a friend of the farmer in helping getting rid of insect pests!

C'est la 2eme que je vois aujourd'hui. Cette aprés midi, une est passée à trois mêtres devant moi dans mon jardin. A cette saison, on les entends mais avec un peu de chance on arrive à les voir. Je vais essayer de t'envoyer une photo prise il y a deux ou trois ans.Je veillai un autre oiseau quand cette huppe s'est posée.
