Rio Manzanares Walkway and the Teleférico de Madrid

A pleasing walk along Madrid's River. They sank a motorway below it and freed up the surface to make this totally pedestrian riverside park.

Thought up in the 80s and pushed through all the red tape by one of the more popular city mayors of the day. Implemented in the 90s and early 00s.

It was a popular decision to bury the motorway and create a pedestrian waterside park, made by a popular mayor who is still compared favourably today against all who have followed him!

Good, I wish they'd do that here! In our town they tend to put trains and trams underground and let the bloody cars clog up everything above...

Thank you, gudrun. The geology of the underlying soil and rocks makes tunnelling relatively easy in Madrid so there are road tunnels everywhere as well new-ish mainline railways. There was a lot of tunnelling in the 80s, 90s and 00s.
