These grafitti were commissioned by the socialist Madrid Authority from world-renowned street artists at a controversial site that had been waste-ground for decades (privately owned and in a prime location ... a polemical issue in Madrid). The good grafitti (such as here) were removed after one year ... and allowed to be replaced by local amateur rubbish (it would have pained me too much to have recorded it) and paid still!
Such was local politics in times of relative plenty. Things will get much, much worse.
(that all makes me sound very right wing but that ain't necessarily so!).

Terrific street art Andy. If it is done as well as this it brightens up disused sites and lifts your mood. It sounds like the replacement is a bit of an eyesore and it is is a shame this has been removed. A lovely colourful HFF. Have a good weekend and stay safe.

I used to walk past here twice a week between Chamartín station and the four towers (teaching English), for a couple of years. So I witnessed the evolution of this site from waste ground to artistic focus back to waste ground!
What goes around comes around!

About 3 or 4 street artists at this point and many more all around this site from all round the world. They flocked to this site because the Madrid local Authority paid them. This lot are certainly talented!

Now this street art is absolutely gorgeous. There is a lot of talent there. I do hope you have been taking care - I gather that the lockdown has been eased, but now the figures have started to rise again. I do hope that you stay safe.

I really love street art, the fine art, like this one I mean!
I look for it everywhere in various cities: I consider it one of the few true compelling contemporary art form.
I am dismayed that they wanted to remove it!

Thank you, Bea! They DID remove it about a year ago and replaced it with local artists' stuff which was a good effort but not a patch on the previous works by world-renowned street artists.
