Andy Rodker club has replied to Diane Putnam clubOnly today, I was taking a class through 'English-style' rather than 'Spanish-style' e-mail writing (ie, short and to the point, without anything unnecessary which the Spanish find impossible to achieve; their emails are on average 3 times as long as the English equivalent! "But you HAVE to say this and include that and repeat this and go into great detail with that"l, they will say. "No you don't!", I will reply!
I then use, as an example, the PA announcement frequently heard on the Madrid metro which (translated) goes something like this; "The next station is on a bend. On alighting, please take care not to place a foot between the train and the platform."
I ask them to guess the London Underground equivalent and they always come up with an equally long construction. When I tell them it is "Mind the gap!" they are astonished; but they get the point!
