Coyote and Sandhill Cranes
When we were in Yellowstone in May of 2019 we saw this Coyote stalking a pair of Sandhill Cranes along Yellowstone's lower west side. The Coyote seemed to us to be pretending no interest in the Cranes while always moving closer. The Cranes were staying just out of his reach, however, and the Coyote finally gave up the chase.

I wanted to remind myself which bird I was thinking about and came up with this page of pictures and information about African cranes! www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sandhill_Crane/overview
Be sure to visit, if only to scroll down the page to see the pictures--there are some right dandies, and oh dear, the chick pictures...awwww...darling!
AH HAH! Here's why the crowned crane is deeply embedded in my mind! I remembered seeing them at the SF Zoo and took pictures!

One other diversion...did you ever get to see this totally fun collage I did of my zoo trip? I love this picture collage so much, and it includes that crane picture too! www.ipernity.com/doc/290645/17689693//in/album/414789
It also includes my usual documentation of my day there at the zoo. Nice to revisit that fun day! :)
Back to your pictures! I have to admit, my favorite picture was of the coyote by itself because it's so beautiful! What a fluffy, colorful, healthy animal. Perfect exposure and details for me to enjoy and an interesting position as well, hind foot lifted. We have coyotes on the property sometimes, there's a pack of them that roam the area and will sometimes spend an hour at night howling their choruses to the moon. Glad they don't do that on our property though, what a racket!
Do you guys have coyotes around your place too? I would expect so, such adaptable predators. Where we live, it is a well-known NO-NO to let cats roam free, dogs out to hang out in large areas next to BLM or other unpopulated areas, or smaller farm animals to run around without high (and deeply set) fencing and/or guard animals. Otherwise they WILL be killed by the many predators around here which include coyotes, foxes, puma (rare!), and large raptors like red-tailed hawks (Sharp-Shinned and Cooper's Hawks are too small to take anything but chicks I expect). In fact, feral cats and dogs have been known to be an issue as well. I do love being out here but at the same time, one must never forget that we are visitors to this place and not the true owners of it. I appreciate that very much!
Hey, I saw you left a note on one of my lucky dragonfly pictures, YAY!! You and I share a total impatience for waiting and this is why we don't have albums full of skittish insect pictures! :D I do love that we still will try when the opportunity presents itself and sometimes we get lucky! :) I do hope that I'll get to take some pictures of dragonflies with my macro lens some day but so far I've been skunked in that department. :D
Your remarks about my hiking pictures makes me so happy--as my intention for all of my hiking albums was to create an immersive experience for visitors so they might feel as if they were with me to enjoy the day! :) YAY!! How wonderful that you felt like you were there too. I love this too...there's nothing like visiting a person's pictures (like yours!) where enough visual and description has been provided that I feel like I am there. Just as you do, it is always my desire to try to present this to every visitor. :) Not everyone will be able to go to a place, but I can try to fill in the blanks to create a rewarding visit! :) Yet another thing we share! *high five*
Ah well, there will be other basketball games, and visiting with your family sounds like it was really nice. :) Soup for the potluck today? What kind I wonder? We took out our leftover goose soup (just like chicken soup but no noodles and goose and chicken for the protein...there are carrots and celery too and lots of yummy, savory flavors...it is a bone-broth base from the goose and chicken bones that we then removed) and have been enjoying it with more biscuits that Steve made! :)
LOL, I am so mixed up! I thought you guys were headed out today (Sunday) but you're leaving tomorrow! And wasn't Ethiopian last night? I think it was but you're making more veggies for the rest of it tonight?! In any event, I am still working on my faulty teleporter so that I might appear and STEAL IT ALL! :D BTW, Steve loves the idea of us making up some keto Ethiopian dishes...yay! :)
I do remember you mentioning your clever visits to Yellowstone to avoid the crowds and we will be sure to adopt those ideas whenever we get to visit. Makes such good sense. Also, if we were there during the "busy" hours, all we'd do would be to Go Up and suddenly the park would be ours! I know I've said it before, but it's just amazing how SWAMPED a place can be and the very moment you ascend to any elevation AT ALL, the herds lessen. The higher you go, the less people...and so you can get to the top of a hill and look down at all of the mooing bovines below and cackle in your greatness for figuring out the trick of visiting popular parks at peak times! :D And then, quiet as a mousie...when the afternoon carries away the herds and the dust begins to settle, one can scurry down to enjoy the majesty of the popular features with a mere fraction of people there were before! :) CAPITAL!! :D *high five*
LOLOL, Nancy and Steve are the exact same about getting out the door. Except in Steve's case, we're usually 45 min to an hour later than we plan to go...he's getting a bit better, sometimes it's just 30 min and SOMETIMES we actually get out on time! This is definitely an area where I must work on my patience. And yet, it's sometimes me who ends up holding us up as I finally remember something I didn't think about as we're heading out. *egg on the face* I try to remember this when feeling annoyed and impatient...and then I remember to think more carefully about things I shouldn't be forgetting. Work in Progress!!
We are very delighted at the latest development in our new RV! It came with an "entertainment center" which included a (crappy) tv on the wall. At first Steve thought it was nice, but I kept telling him, "DUDE...we'll NEVER EVER use it. We don't WATCH tv except for an hour at night to camp Chicken, and that's in the bedroom!" Finally he admitted that it was a horrible waste of space. What's more, there was no place to put our espresso machine and grinder, nor did we have enough room for our electronic charging area. The obvious choice would be to pull out the tv and turn it into a coffee bar with a cabinet above for the charging stuff and electronic gadget storage.
After a bunch of issues along the way--tried putting in tiles and discovered they lifted and the grout cracked and we never considered the fact that an RV in motion is like a nonstop earthquake...tiles would NEVER work. As a lucky find, Steve was wandering around a home-improvement store one day and discovered a one-piece, 4ft counter kit that would PERFECTLY slide into that spot! The color scheme also went exactly right with the coach! And so the past two days, with all ducks in a row, he installed and siliconed the counter into place and finally, with peacock tail at full and glorious display, ushered me over to take a peekie at his workmanship. ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS!!! The counter is better than the tile could have ever been, it looks as if it were installed originally! No more stupid tv (heh, it's been out of the coach since the first week it was here) and now that the counter is DONE, Steve will be able to get started on the cabinet above. He's so happy! And he'll also be making the drawers under my bed. Things are progressing and we couldn't be happier! :)
Ok, it's time for brunch! :) Have a wonderful day and tell Nancy I said hello! (added a post last night about the page I read from "Listen to the Animals" and I think I'll read my page for today now! :)
