Masdevallia naevia
This orchid species from Ecuador blooms on spikes that hold the flowers well above the foliage. The flowers are quite large, too, measuring about 4 inches from tip to tip, but their odd and rather awkward shape is their most remarkable feature along with the purple spot at the base of the upper "tail." The name "naevia" refers to this and means "birthmark. "
