An Autumn in Tandle Hills

Trees

The Autumn cometh

A local park (Tandle Hills, Oldham) just a few weeks later than now, last year, reminds us of the photographic pleasures of this season. Enjoy Pip shows almost same spot a few years earlier

Autumn comes to Uppermill

09 Oct 2018 25 38 553
Just days after seeing my first Autumn leaves of 2018, I get to see a scene like this. This spot on the River Tame is just near the visitors centre and stepping stones. The prehistoric plants/bones are a bit of a mystery to me I must admit. Sorry but they are not original to this spot. However they make a fine centre of attention behind which are these beautiful yellows. As normal here, enjoy full screen.

Tandle Hills in Autumn

18 Oct 2018 17 24 527
A look at a local country forest park just a 25 minute drive away. After posting my last years photo from almost the same spot (see pip), I thought that I had better take another look this year. Not to be disappointed here is the result. Enjoy full size.

Autumn Joy!

26 Oct 2018 35 48 586
Just when I was thinking that Autumn might quickly bypass me this year, a spell of sunshine lets me go find these wonderful colours in my local valley. Enjoy full size.

Autumnal Fence

A special treat for all lovers of Autumn colours. Taken yesterday whilst walking the stretch of the River Wharfe near Burnsall. As usual best viewed full screen on black. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

A day to remember!

31 Oct 2018 13 15 608
Strid Wood, one of the largest remnants of sessile oak trees in the Yorkshire Dales hugs the banks of the river Wharfe and invites visitors to walk its shaded paths. Here in Autumn, there is even a more magical feel about it with these golden canopies. Today, is special -it's a Halloween adventure' day, when parents and their children look around the trees to find spooky spiders webs, ghouls and witches along with their spooky sounds. For me though -I totally ignore all that in favour of natures abundance here. Enjoy full screen boltonabbey.com/what-to-see/strid-wood-and-the-strid

The Strid in Autumn

31 Oct 2018 36 40 654
Strid Wood, part of the 'Bolton Abbey' estate in the Yorkshire Dales is always a delight to visit, especially in Autumn. Here we see the very bottom section of the famous narrow Strid, where the grand River Wharfe is forced into a rocky gully at times only a meter or so wide. A place of danger in the wrong weather but here we see the river just after the fast flow, now relaxing and reflecting the golden hues of the season. See Pip for the Strid itself

Ennerdale Water

29 Oct 2014 37 57 485
This months Ipernity SPC competition was 'fences', would you believe, and so here is one of my Lake District shots of 2014 from the beautiful, lesser know 'lake' of Ennerdale Water. (it came 6th, and so you can see the quality of these competitions.) More info on the Ipernity SPC: www.ipernity.com/group/2249054/discuss/190840 Ennerdale Water is the most westerly lake in the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. It is a glacial lake, with a maximum depth of 150 feet, and is ½ mile to a mile wide and 2½ miles long. -Wikipedia Pip - HFF and enjoy the weekend, Herb

Derryclare Lough, Connemara

12 Sep 2018 27 42 571
A freshwater lake situated at the edge of the 12 Pins (12 Bens) of Connemara, County Galway. A wonderful scene, I believe when the reflections are perfect with snow on the tops but here we are in almost flat lighting but at least the sun is on the far mountains. Enjoy.

Mystic woods fence

04 Dec 2018 59 81 572
As autumn ends and winter approaches we are sometimes blessed here in the North of England with such scenes as this. Here we see a little walk that I have done a thousand times heading for the reservoirs. In this light we see sights and hear sounds that we often miss but what joy to accompany that as the sun peeks through and shows us the way forward. .... watch out for that branch there! Best viewed full screen. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

A riverside walk

01 Nov 2018 28 45 481
A walk along the river Wharfe just above Burnsall in Autumn has ample rewards. One of which could be a bump on your forehead if somehow you did not see this fallen tree by the pathway. Enjoy. PiP

A Wintery Wonderland fence

23 Jan 2019 62 98 668
Just minutes from my house sits an old railway line. Long since converted into a liner park walk. Lined with fences and trees, now and again it is struck by beautiful low side lighting. Mix that up with one of the first hoarfrost of the season and green leaves on the evergreens and we end up with a painting of our Winter here in Oldham. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb A must, for full screen viewing!

Alice in Winterland

23 Jan 2019 46 51 648
A Winter's walk can always turn up the unexpected. Here, we see a rare day of light snow and hoarfrost mixed with a little blue sky and wondrous light. The figure, whom I have named Alice, is seen here taking her dog to see the light too.

Lone tree, fence and a horse

23 Jan 2019 65 126 975
The recent cold spell and snowfall provided me with another chance to get a winter fence. Here, just an hours walk from my home is a tree and seemingly the same horse that I have been photographing for years. This time this HFF group has pulled me closer to the fence. I wish you all, a great weekend, Herb

Winters snap

23 Jan 2019 27 30 410
After browsing today, a 1925 photo book of old Germany, every large page in magnificent sepia, I was tempted to remind myself of how our modern digital scenes might look again using this effect. Here, after a brief cold snap, is a local reservoir, seen in quite a different light. Enjoy full size on black. ps look at the dates of this and my last photo here.

Reach to the skies

11 Mar 2019 22 18 359
A walk up my local 'Chew Valley' brings me to a favourite tree again. Each time it seems to have grown a bit taller. Just behind me there is snow on the ground. The sky, not only showing the flight path of an earlier aeroplane to Manchester but also the first signs of Storm Gareth. The tree -a Silver Birch, is beautifully lit here by a low subdued sun just showing itself over Indians Head, also behind me. Enjoy large. Pip

Treebeard

01 Feb 2019 31 37 648
Seen near St Georgios, Cyprus. There can be strong winds coming from the north over the sea just metres from here. Years of battling the winds can cause strange shapes in some trees. To me a photographic oddity. This is almost certainly a Juniper which are coniferous plants in the genus Juniperus of the cypress family Cupressaceae. ps Treebeard is -a famous tree in the Tolkein Lord of the Rings novel. So maybe this tree is in reality an 'Ent' :)

Spotlight on an Autumn tree

03 Nov 2014 29 31 341
People who have followed my work for some time, especially on other sites will know that I am a lover of the 'Lone Tree' photo. Here is one of my trees from 2014 Taken in the 'Chew Valley' not far from my beloved Dovestones Dam, Oldham. The morning sun just peeping above the enclosed deep valley starts to light up this tree without as yet lighting up the background scree. (The two boughs from the same trunk almost makes it look more like two trees!) PiP Enjoy full screen on black!
