Lawers or The Lochan na Lairige Dam

Lawers or The Lochan na Lairige Dam
After yesterday’s photo of a close-up of three of the arches (pip) we see here two photos of the complete dam. There are in fact 6 arches to the left of centre and five on its right side. It was constructed in 1951-6 and measures 344m in length by 42m in height. It should be seen here that the wall is in fact solid to the top and there is no gap to let light (or water) through to the inside top of the arches and so an optical illusion there. Lochan Na Lairige is part of the Breadalbane Hydroelectric Scheme. The alternative front view (last photo) is from the reservoir itself and can be noted how low it is despite the amount of rain up here.
See Pip for alternative view

Strange that the light source is perhaps an optical illusion Herb ~ it seems to be pretty uniform over the whole length of the dam and has an intensity far greater than what is seemingly available ~ I'm just curious

I know how it looks Nick: I stood at the base (inside) of the arch and looked up -it was perfectly smooth right to the arched roof edge. It is simply the colouring that creates the illusion of being lit from inside the top. Not sure if it was designed that way or it has just weathered.

Cheers. Herb

An amazing structure...........and it blends nicely into the surrounding landscape. The detail in this image is outstanding Herb and I love the earthy colour palette.

A lovely capture in the first PiP too,............which puts the dam firmly in context.

Glad that the two made the grade Keith. I had seen this dam on GE and so wanted to visit it myself.

A good capture and info' Herb,. Interestingly the hydroelectric pipework - can be seen from the road ''street view'' and also can be seen emerging 5km further along at 'Finlarig sub stn' on the coast., they must have deep tunnelled to get it there..// Dj.
