A Frosty walk

A Frosty walk
Just ten minutes’ walk from my door is a small valley that sometimes shines in its beauty. This is that time, when frost and light makes us forget the old industrial wasteland that once this was. The river used to run with glowing neon colours of every description as it ran alongside many old cotton mills and industrial tips. One would never ever want to dip any part of unprotected skin into it. I used to walk along here with my old school mates whilst watching the many rats that ran in abundance here in the days when there were no trees in this place. Fortunately, that has all changed for the better and all I see nowadays is the odd dog-walker and keen landscape photographer. I even see the odd small fish.
Enjoy full screen.

It's great to see how nature recaptures its own! Where my parents live, Saint Day Cornwall, the same process happened after the decline of the mining industry. What was Hell On Earth (or 'The Richest Square Mile on Earth' - circa 1820) is now a lovely tranquill green spot with not one hint of past blight!
Another lovely shot, Herb!

Hi again Andy. Yes, how things have changed. I needn't tell you how bad Lancashire and especially places like Oldham was in the Industrial revolution. I remember as a kid, most of the Autumn and Winter was covered in smog as well as the deep snows we used to have. I was actually brought up in quite a clean place in the country but I am vey happy that things have changed for the better. Only the mental state of some of our inhabitants here have not realised that some of us want to live in fresh air and clean rural sights without passing thoughtless fly-tips on every corner. .... I am starting...........

Keep safe my friend. Herb

A lovely scene, Herb. If I'd not read your notes, I wouldn't have picked that this was previously an industrial wasteland - it gives a little hope for other environmental restoration. As a matter of interest, where is this (your mention of the cotton industry makes me think Manchester area...).

Good to see you George. Yes, Oldham, on the outskirts of Manchester has changed a lot over 50 or more years but there is still more to do. I have mapped this for you now.

The warm light and colour on the right is beautiful Herb. Great information! I would walk on the right hand side of the river....a bit warmer ;-))

Thanks Rosa. yes, I liked the light too. The frost in the distance gives a very nice back-light. From the bridge, one can go straight up a steep ramp or turn left and follow the path. Only everywhere was pretty soft and muddy on this day. Boot walking essential here.

Another one where light wins out. I did wonder about keeping this for a HFF but I have a lot of fence shots anyway. A fine walk from my home but now the council have decided to cut back the trees on the half mile track to here and it is like a quagmire after their vehicles have completely wrecked the good path. A good idea executed without any consideration whatsoever. Typical!

Such a wonderful example of how, given time, nature can override the mess us humans inevitably leave behind us.

I nearly always say this about your photos.............but the light really is glorious, especially where it has brought out the detail and warm colours on the far bank beyond the bridge.

A beautiful country scene.............very well composed and taken Herb.

Thanks a lot Keith. I have always know that scenery such as this can be captured and scene by many people so I always endeavour to go with my camera when I think the light is interesting. To catch it, as you know, is my endeavour. Glad I managed it here for you. The sun and frost helped.

That is why I write such true descriptions Christa. So that we never forget how dark such times were. Glad you liked it.

Thank goodness, the majority of such places are now almost pure again (but we must not did too deep!). I know that you understand light well my friend and so your comment touches me.

Moin,
früher hat man schon viele schlimme Dinger der Natur zugemutet.
Heute ist es das Pflanzengift und die Überdüngung.
Klasse aufgenommen.

You are so right, At least in the past the dirt and devastation was a little more obvious (but not always -as the rivers were full of invisible toxic poisons) I know we still have such things, driven by overfertilization etc. At east it looks better now.
