Winters snap

Winters snap
After browsing today, a 1925 photo book of old Germany, every large page in magnificent sepia, I was tempted to remind myself of how our modern digital scenes might look again using this effect. Here, after a brief cold snap, is a local reservoir, seen in quite a different light.

Enjoy full size on black.

ps look at the dates of this and my last photo here.

Jean-luc Drouin, , Kawasirius, diedje and 23 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thanks Ulrich, good that you share with me here a blast from the past maybe. Not quite the mountains of Bayern but still something to be admired perhaps.

Viele Grüße, Herbert

Hi Peter. As I was browsing this book, I said to myself, these brown landscapes look every bit as good as today's coloured ones do. Most of those were portrait size though. Glad that you approved.

Dang it !...... Herb !.. I was just thinking how much your scene reminds me of the mountains of Bayern... anyway... not to worry... this is a most pleasing effect with a difference.
Cheers from Dave.....

IHi Dave, I might look for one of my mountain scenes and convert it to sepia to see how it goes. When I first joint Flickr, the first hundred or so photos were all in monochrome -many toned like this but they never got much feedback. Anyway, great that yu liked this too.

Gorgeous, moody, and lovely picture. It looks so old! Sepia is such a wonderful way to evoke age in a current image. I love to play with b/w filters to see how an image looks with the various tints. It's surprising how different the mood becomes with one tint compared to another.

If you haven't tried Topaz Lab's B/W Effects, you should take a look...really fun and surprising suite of choices to play with and tweak to your heart's content. :)

Hi Janet and many thanks for enjoying this photo of mine with me here. My book of Germany in 1925 which shows very many from the Alpine area's demonstrates to me how effective sepia toning can be. Indeed, when I printed my own large exhibition photographs, I did quite a few in Sepia, usually to do with the actual paper though. I am happy how this turned out and indeed, I used 'Silver Efex Pro' to help me. I know Topaz Labs have some great effects too. Normally though, I just converted to monochrome and then toned them. I try not to add too many effects though, as to not detract from the real photo taken. That being said, I have dabbled with some photos in the past to make them more a 'work-of-art' rather than the pure photo that they started of as. As a very amateur water-colour painter, that comes natural to me too.

Have a great week, Herb

It was a very cold day, but if I tell you the sky was blue with puffy clouds here then you can see the effect is total:) Glad you liked it.

I love those old books Herb and this looks magnificent in sepia! I remember so well watching my father print his photos on a Saturday evening in the blacked out dining room! He would have loved the digital age though.
Cheers, Rosa.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Rosalyn Hilborne
Thanks for that Rosa. I used to do my developing and printing with a big board over the bath in our rather small bathroom. As the window was small too,it was easily blacked out and of course lit up in red. Fortunately the other usual bathroom facility was in another adjacent room :) When I came out with a fine wet print it was the most joyous thing. (my new baby perhaps :~) ) As you say the digital age is another thing altogether. And phones..

Got to keep churning my landscapes out in one way or another Keith. Maybe i shall revert to creating frames for these again someday as I used to do with so many of my Panoramio shots. But... great that you enjoyed the toned effect and it seemed to suit this subject too.

Excellent Herb I process I enjoy doing myself, black and white does seem to bring something different out in shots like this. Beautifully converted

Herb Riddle club has replied to Richard Nuttall
Thanks Richard. I have just been into your gallery and seen your latest batch of similar mono landscapes too. Great work from you. There is something slightly more artistic about these monos, perhaps letting our imaginations filling in the missing colours. I used to do many (as said above) but not so many now as it seems that they have generally gone out of fashion.

Beautifully composed with the tree framing the photo on the left and the shoreline curving on the right. Your bw conversion and the toning are well done! The photo has a timeless quality with no modern stuff intruding.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Gudrun club
Good to have your approval on this Gudrun. You already know that I take care of my framing etc. The toning too, is a thing that I have been doing periodically for some years now with some of my photos. I am glad that it has conveyed the desired quality of timeless.
