Mulgrave Barracks picturesque Ruins

Mulgrave Barracks picturesque Ruins
Seen just of the N71 near 'Ladies View' on the way to Killarney, Ireland. After not finding any reference to this on my research one of our fellow Ipernity viewers came up with the answer. With prominent towers, the Mulgrave Barracks appear to be an ancient castle, but it is really the remains of a nineteenth century Royal Irish Constabulary station from the nineteenth century. Makes for a very interesting subject though. See the comment by Keith, below.
Looks good full size on black.

You got a great one here well worth a look around till I saw the no trespassing sign . Just love the view on the PIP. I find it interesting no history of the grand old building.

Nice to see you here Steve. Yep, a lonely place really - just down from the Ladies View car park but on a bit of road with a nasty bend and double yellow lines. Nothing on the net about this other than one other photo I found. Probably somebodies idea of grandeur in an old farm house ? The pip - you have seen that shot before.

Ah yes - it may look gorgeous but we can't get in any closer. as you can see it is all fenced off (maybe an HFF contender here :) ) . Nevertheless, like you, I like this -looking as if it could adorn an old romantic story book cover or at least a fine painting over a roaring fire in its grand fireplace.
Thank you Marie-claire. ~ Herb

A wonderful blend of nature and man made, if it was part of an estate it could have been built as a 'garden ornament' possibly to look like a ruin

Hi Peter, well since you was here last, Keith, below, has found out the real answers to what, who and why. Without the info, this is a far more romantic place but, ah well, that's reality for you. Glad you enjoyed it.

A wonderful spot to greet you, very much by surprise on this wild road Roger, as it is hardly marked on the map. Its history in a link below by courtesy of Keith.

Herb..........could this be the same place: lastadventurer.com/last-adventurers-fieldnotes/mulgravebarracks .......it's in the right area and looks pretty similar!

A cracking shot, whatever it's origins. I love the composition and the light and viewed large it's easy to see the fantastic amount of fine detail you've captured.

And finally I get down to the hero of the moment! Keith, you have cracked it here with your excellent research, of which I have tried to give you full credit. It is certainly the same place, however, I am somewhat saddened by the reality of truth in this building. All my romantic bubbles of a maid crying from the tower and her knight trying to rescue her, popped! Thanks so much for this and you demonstrate again how we, here on Ipernity can help each other.
Of course, delighted that you liked my image too.

Hi George, happy that you enjoyed another of my Irish tour pictures here. My research did seem to suggest that it may have been once an earlier building but that was not clear.

Hi Herb

Very nice picture of this ruin, and great info too.

I had visited this on the evening of 8 June 2012, photographed it (I seem to remember putting it on Pano), but had no idea what it was. Thank you so much for sharing your picture and your knowledge!

Best Wishes, HFF, and a Good Weekend

Hi Peter and thanks for this. Your visit here would then have been like mine -just a ruin without any sign at all to what it was. In reality, our mutual friend Kieth, above, provided the answer. I have some pictures from the other angle too, which look quite different. I presume, like me, you have a backup of all your Panoramio uploads.
Cheers and belated HFF to you too, Herb
