A tribute to Panoramio

A tribute to Panoramio
Today, Google's Panoramio has come to an end. I was a member since 2008 with over 1500 photos and 3.5+ million views but more than that, many thousands of friendly comments and shared moments, just like we see here in Ipernity. I feel bereft of a friend but fortunately via Ipernity and other photo sharing sites our friendly photo-loving community lives on. To all that followed me in Panoramio, a hearty THANK YOU.

, , Erhard Bernstein, and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

The sunset of Panoramio ! After 12 year ! A whole world of feelings and memories lost in nothingness! Warm greetings to you, Herb!

I know we all still have the photos, but the conversation threads were also just as important, I wish I'd copied and pasted some of the more amusing ones. The ending was brutal. I believed that the only thing that would be unavailable, until the final closure in 12 months, was the possibility of posting photographs and making new comments. How naive! I should have realized that Google would be more aggressive.

Hi Amelia, yes I know exactly what you mean. I thought that would be the case too, however I did manage to screen print some 200 of my photos which for me included not only the first few comments, my title but also the all-important geographic co-ordinates reminding me where it was taken from. I slowed down doing those screen shots thinking that I would have a further 12 months to do that. Naive applies to me too. Ah well, at least we have Ipernity and also our photos.
Best wishes, Herb

Maybe it's better so, a clean cut. I have all the conversations in the mails, but it would a bit difficult to put them together.

Fine sentiments and a nice farewell shot, Herb. YS
I agree, I thought the comments would be spared and the other info too, just that they wouldn't be able to be added to! I don't think Google told us they would do this. The indications were otherwise ... but then Google had hated Pano for some time and they obviously bore a grudge. My dim view of them has got a lot dimmer!
Best wishes,
Andy

Hi Andy, you know, I never resented nor disliked Google. I also had them to thank for Panoramio and I must admit to being almost addicted to Google Earth not to mention their search engine and now YouTube as well. However you are right, they let us down badly in the end. I thought they would do much better. At least I have not lost any money! :) Herb

Hey, welcome Herb. Do not let it get so close to your heart. Panoramio was good. Google is evil. There are many at your side. You're just sitting in another train. Greetings, Frank

When I looked this morning at the PA site, it was - also it was announced - a choc. All our comments, the groups, the favorit photos and photographers - everything gone and lost forever. That was a precious part of us. I feel that I don´t like those bones, that they have left us. When I will haved proved my takeouts, I will close my account.
Cordial greetings
Cornelia

You know Cornelia, I know exactly what you feel like. I had joined G+ some years back and I have backups of every one of my photos and so my 1700 Pano photos mught as well go to G+ cloud rather a mass deletion. The Pano account will be closed by them next year, so why take the trouble? Good to see you here at least. Herb

... "Favorite Photos", "Favorite Photographers", threads of communication, Panoramigos, ability to readily access a universe of diverse photographs: all ripped away and apparently never accessible ... it is easy to look forward to new beginnings, but hard not to be bitter about that which was lost (some of what was a surprise) ...
