This is part of NZ you cant walk on any more too many things are spreading in the Forrest's. there are a number of things that are brought on shoes.

While I was in NZ I watched the 8 part Documentary that also makes this up "2050 Predator free NZ". You think there is no Predators in NZ there are three that are small , Rats, Stoats and Possums. they all eat the wild bird life in NZ which is falling very low in numbers. well worth a read.

The best part the parts that are Predator free birds flourish..

Lovely image, Steve. At least it seems they don't have foxes and feral cats.

I do remember that they did have foxes but never heard of feral cats in NZ. It is some thing that the whole country is going all out to do. there is a lot of deep bush in NZ but those places are getting done. the experiment was conducted on peninsular and the result was they could eradicate every thing but they have to be targeted and birds came back from the brink. when you think about it all three where introduces never where in the country from the start.

I for one hope that they are able to pull it off as the birds around Auckland are noticeably fewer.

NZ forrest are very safe one you have no problem going into nothing to do you harm. the sad part is but you can do the harm with your shoes most tracks have boot/shoe washing stations to try and over come this or they are just closed off to the public.

I knew a few years ago that the bush was being closed down as my parents they like to go into the bush and take photos.

NZ bush is very dense and full in the wild state not easy to walk through it in any straight line like we can do here in the west. Wild NZ bush is almost a solid wall. I knew as a teenager the introduced possums where decimating the trees habitat. The Rats and Stoats are the biggest problem NZ birds have very few natural predators so build nest on the ground but that did not help the tree dwellers they both climb.

2050 cant come soon enough but from what I saw its getting there even to the point of getting a single Rat of a Peninsula and using all kind of modern equipment to track them. the up shot they know it works so it is full steam ahead.
