.Designed by French structural engineer Michel Virlogeux and architects François Doyelle and Charles Lavigne, construction of the bridge began in 1988 and lasted seven years. The bridge was inaugurated on 20 January 1995 and set a world record when it was completed. When it was opened to the public, it was in fact the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world and also had a record distance between pylons for a cable-stayed bridge. It was more than 250 metres longer between the piers than the previous record. The Normandy Bridge remains the bridge with the longest span in France.
Connecting Seine-Maritime to Calvados and Le Havre to Honfleur, the bridge is 215 metres high and 2141 metres long. Built of concrete and metal, the imposing structure has four lanes of motor traffic, two pedestrian lanes and two bicycle lanes. Thanks to its height, it does not obstruct the navigation of boats going up and down the Seine. The bridge's two gigantic pylons, in the shape of an inverted Y, resemble two giants rooted in the ground on each side of the river. The long cables look like thin ropes in the distance, and the thin bridge is curved like a ship's sail. It was even designed like an aircraft to withstand winds of over 300 km/h!
