Ravenna San Vitale Mosaici

The focal point of the mosaic decoration is located in the apse basin, where there is the representation of Christ Cosmocrator, a particular representation of the Messiah inspired by a verse from the Old Testament which reads: "Heaven is my throne, and the earth stools for my feet".
Christ is in fact sitting right on top of a turquoise globe, suspended on a rock base from which the four rivers of Paradise flow, and stands, in a central position, against a golden background, interrupted at the top by some red and blue clouds. Below it stretches a green meadow with flowers and shrubs. According to ancient early Christian iconography, Jesus is amberbe, he has a crusading halo, holds the scroll of the divine Law in his left hand and, with his right hand, hands the crown of martyrdom to Saint Vitale, who receives it with veiled hands. On the opposite side, we recognise Bishop Ecclesio, the one who started the construction of the Church of San Vitale, in the act of offering Christ the model of the building.
