Keills Chapel

Keills Chapel
Keills Chapel is a simple, rectangular chapel dedicated to St Cormac. It is one of few churches from the 1100s and 1200s surviving in Argyll. The chapel served as the parish church of Knapdale until the parish was split into two in 1734.

The chapel stands on a slope above Loch na Cille, with the island of Danna beyond. The cross is a rough plain replica of the shape of the original cross, which is now inside the chapel to protect it from the elements.

The church is so small and unassuming! I love how the cross and church look over the Loch- although it looks different I'm reminded of Iona!

It is almost as remote as Iona, Gudrun, and far less visited. The weather was just awful, and full wet weather gear was necessary. We did mange to walk further towards the end of the peninsula looking fro a small pier built by Thomas Telford, but I was worried about my camera, so didn't find it.

I have a camera bag with a waterproof which you can pull out of the bottom- it works!

The rucksack is small enough to qualify as cabin baggage.

I already have the Lowepro top loader with the attached rain cover, but I need a waterproof protector for the camera when it's out of the bag and out of the car, Gudrun. The hotel shower cap is a good starting point. ;-)

A lovely little church in a great setting, Amelia. A beautiful part of Scotland (whatever the weather).

The weather got fractionally better after this, George, so the day wasn't a total wash-out. This is the first time we've been to this part of Scotland.

I really like the simple architecture of the chapel.....it seems very fitting for the location. Beautifully composed and taken Amelia.

Not a lot of frills and furbelows here, Keith. The door was locked unfortunately. I would have liked to have seen the old cross and other stones that are inside.
