Approach to Aston Lock 2 showing the Balance Beams

Approach to Aston Lock 2 showing the Balance Beams
A balance beam is the long arm projecting from the landward side of the gate over the towpath. As well as providing leverage to open and close the heavy gate, the beam also balances the (non-floating) weight of the gate in its socket, and so allows the gate to swing more freely.
There are plenty of mooring points here, while you wait for the locks to work.

Leif Fielstrup Guldbrandsen, tiabunna, , Roger (Grisly) and 10 other people have particularly liked this photo

Thank you once again, William. We await with a sense of hope for the results of the survey.

Lovely reflections here and plenty of (ever)green even in winter. A beautiful place though I'd probably be a bit bored on a boating holiday;-) I'd prefer walks along the canal as you did:-)

Does ivy not stay evergreen in Germany, Gudrun? It clings to the bark of trees and sometimes kills them. I clinkg to wooden fences where birds like to nest, and it clings onto brickwork. It can be difficult to remove. A couple of years ago I went on a canal trip for a day, with some friends. I was more often walking on the towpath than sailing in the boat. ;-)

We do have ivy here but it always seemed to me it grows more profusely in Britain!

I am nearly finished with The Montgomery Canal walk, Keith. I think everyone is becoming a bit bored by it all now. ;-)

Lovely shot Amelia. I have walked along many canals but never actually holidayed on one or even been on a short trip! Must put that right :) Cheers, Rosa.

I really don't like being trapped on a narrow boat, Rosa, but maybe it's horses for courses. I much prefer walking along the towpath. Try a day trip first and see what you think. ;-)
Cheers, Amelia

Lovely capture Amelia, the railings on the lock and in stark contrast to the fence on the bank, like the reflections.

I think the fence on the back that you are referring too is actually a pair of balance beams, Roger. The beams allow the lock gates to open smoothly.
