James Brown and the Famous Flames aka Nat Kendrick and the Swans with the original "(Do the) Mashed Potatoes" (Dessie Rosier). The composer was actually James Brown but contractual obligations made the ruse necessary. Nat Kendrick was the drummer for the Famous Flames. Released in 1960 the issue had Miami d.j. Carlton Coleman shouting the vocal. The single dented the Top One Hundred and peaked at number eight on the R&B chart.

The Dartells' (Doug Phillips, Dick Burns, Galen Mills, Gary Peeler, Corky Wilkie, Rich Piel and Randy Ray) "Hot Pastrami" (Doug Phillips) was a number eleven hit on Billboard in 1962. Apparently the groups backed up Wink Martindale as The Casuals. "Hot Pastrami" charted at number fifteen on the R&B listing. The group's manager was Tom Ayers who went on to play with Johnny Burnett, worked with the Sir Douglas Quintet and Gene Vincent. He later signed David Bowie to RCA.
