Six weeks late and many of his friends short.... but I was so grateful to see him in this butterfly-less Summer.

He did not stay long and he would not stay still

Is there any particular reason for the late arrival and shortage of the swallow tails, Pam? We just have fairly ordinary butterflies in or garden, but I too have noticed a shortage of them this year even though I never use any chemicals.

No.. thats the worry. Its ALL species.. no bees either. I have over 6 years seen 50 species of butterfly here... and by this time there are always butterflies.. but not this year so far.

I find it difficult to make the link via the taxonomy with the Papilio machaon also called Swallowtail in English. But the morphological approach is undeniable. Remarkable colors and depth - and patience - Pam.

The Swallowtails come in so many colours and morphs.

The yellow Eastern Tiger swallowtail here for instance come in a black version too !

It would be, for me, a real culmination of being able to observe it. The only location I visited in USA - where it resides only - for the time being is NY. Little chance to find it there !

To translate "L'ensemble de cette photo est splendide" is close to "The whole photo is splendid " !

L'ensemble = whole / all of and ensemble is also used in English and borrowed from French for the same meaning.
