Mit der Gründung des Chemnitzer Benedikterklosters im Jahr 1136 beginnt nicht nur die Geschichte des heutigen Stadtteils Schloßchemnitz, sondern auch die von Chemnitz. Im Schutze des Klosters wurde im ausgehenden 12. Jahrhundert von hier aus die Stadt in der Chemnitzaue gegründet.
