Today we will travel along the Skeena River towards Prince Rupert. The Skeena River is the second longest river whose entire course lies within the territory of the province of British Columbia. It is about 579 kilometers long from its source on the Spatsizi Plateau to its mouth in Hecate Strait near Prince Rupert. The Skeena is a very important stream for salmon fishing, and several canneries are located near its mouth. The name Skeena is derived from a Native American word meaning "chasm."

Canada Tour Hazelton Sternwheeler

The Hazelton, a sternwheeler that operated on the Skeena River from 1901 to 1912. The first owner was Robert Cunningham, who operated a freight company that served communities along the Skeena River. The Hazelton was named after one of the settlements it served, Hazelton, one of the oldest towns in northern British Columbia, founded in 1866 and the main staging area for the Omineca gold rush. The Hazelton was launched in 1901 , in her first season she made 13 trips to Hazelton and set a new speed record by covering the 180 miles upstream in only forty hours. The return trip downriver was even faster, the Hazelton routinely making it in ten hours. Today, the Hazelton is used as a home and museum

Two landmarks of the village of Hazelton. The Parish House and St Paul's Anglican Church in Old Hazelton. Hazelton is located at the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers, at the foot of the Stekyoden in the Coast Mountains. The village was established in 1866 and developed into the center of the Northwest. Old trails became much-used routes for dogsleds, riders, and transport wagons to gold miners in the Cariboo and Yukon. Hazelton served as the starting point for overland trips and the paddle wheel steamers that went to Prince Rupert on the coast. The Gitxsan have been the guardians and protectors of the land and the important trading post for thousands of years. Today, the Gitxsan and non-Indigenous people live side by side as friends, family and neighbors. Our town is characterized by the beautiful, historic buildings and Gitxsan culture that transport the visitor to another time.

The Gitxsan tribe has reconstructed seven longhouses here in this traditional place. Very impressive look the long painted wooden houses that tell about the four clans that lived here. There is much to learn about the life, traditions and crafts of the Gitxsan tribe, which consists of the clans Frog, Eagle, Wolf and Fireweed. Each clan has its own independent long houses (Wilp), its traditional territories and fishing grounds. Marriages within a clan are forbidden.

Hazelton/ `Ksan is nestled in the spectacularly rugged Roche de Boule Mountain Range. Few places combine natural wonders, ancient cultures, frontier history and community charm so exquisitely. Ksan Historical Village is located near the ancient village of Gitanmaax at the confluence of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers. Ksan has been home to the Gitxsan people for over 8000 years and is a place where generations past and present are honored.
