Departure from Canada's northernmost ice-free harbour PIP 1: Inside Passage Prince Rupert-Port Hardy The Inside Passage is a seaway along the coast of British Columbia (Canada) with about 1000 islands. It stretches over 274 nautical miles in a north-south direction and is a dense network of smaller islands and waterways. Its most important waters are Chatham Strait, Frederick Sound and Clarence Strait. Before the arrival of the European colonists, the Inside Passage was inhabited by Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian people. Because of the abundant food supply on the coast, numerous settlements and migratory territories had formed, in contrast to the tribes on the mainland. In the 18th century, the passage was visited by explorers from Russia, Great Britain, France and Spain. James Cook (1778-1779) and George Vancouver (1792-1793) were the first British to carry out cartographic work. Colonisation by European settlers began in the 19th century. All seagoing vessels can navigate it, it is heavily frequented by shipping. BC Ferries and Alaska Marine Highway System operate ferry services. The Inside Passage is also used for the islands along the ship's route. PIP 2: view back to the deep sea port

When the industrial city of Prince Rupert was founded in 1910, hopes and expectations were high. It was expected that a northern rail line would also open up opportunities for mining, agriculture and forestry. The terminus of a transcontinental rail line was the impetus for extensive settlement. Goods shipped by rail en route to Asian markets would find their final destination in Canada at the city's port. The Canadian Fish & Cold Storage Plant, opened in 1912, was the reason Prince Rupert was long known as the halibut capital of the world. On April 9, 1914, the first through train arrived from Winnipeg, fulfilling the vision that had been set.

One of the landmarks of Prince Rupert, Prince Rupert is literally the end of the road. Located on the north coast of mainland British Columbia, Prince Rupert is known for receiving some of the highest annual rainfall in the world. Despite the rain, Prince Rupert is a great little town with special charm and stunning scenery. Founded in 1910, the city is located in an area that has a rich history. The current port of Prince Rupert was once a hub for Native trade and commerce. With a population of approximately 14,000, the port has taken this tradition of trade and commerce to a higher level. Archaeological and DNA analysis evidence that the north coast of British Columbia has been inhabited by aboriginal peoples for over 10,000 years. Today, First Nations make up more than half of the population, and First Nations culture is ubiquitous in Prince Rupert's cityscape. From the Native basketball tournament to the numerous native artists and carvers who display their work in local galleries and stores, the presence of First Nations is indicative of the deep cultural and historical context of the region.
